Wired vs Wireless Alarm Systems

Anyone considering installing a new security system or upgrading the current one in their home or office is aware that there are two broad categories to choose from: the traditional wired system and newer wireless systems. Each of these system has merits of its own, and it takes an informed homeowner to know which one is right for them.

When wired makes sense

Wired security systems are generally less expensive than wireless systems, so it is logical, and they are great systems. One of the most obvious situations when wired is the best choice is when building a new home. At this point, walls are not fully constructed, so the wires can be installed without causing any damage to the appearance of your home. Another is when the home is a one story or not big. If it is a small two bedroom home, or a ranch style home, a wired system will be easy to cover up.

 When to go wireless

If you are moving into an existing structure or looking to upgrade the system where you live or work, wireless is often the better decision. Wireless systems are more modern, which means that you can incorporate the latest technology into your home. The main pro of wireless is the remote access to your home. With some wireless systems, users are able to lock their home, turn off lights, or even shut down the electricity with their remote, and the wireless sensors can even tell you when something in your house is on or moving around.

A third option

If you still are not sure which type of system you would prefer, you can consider a third option that is becoming increasingly popular in home security: hybrid systems. Hybrid systems have some wired components as well as wireless ones.

Although the most expensive option, hybrid security systems have distinct advantages:

  • hard-wired security with wireless flexibility
  • change and adapt your system as technology progresses
  • works with any home layout

Although these three options are a good place to start, in order to make the final decision about your home or business security system, it is a good idea to contact a professional in your area. They will be able to assess your home or business and help you decide on the most practical system to meet your needs and fit in your budget.
